How to Choose the Right Harness Size for Your Dog

The right harness should feel like nothing at all to your dog, and like complete peace of mind to you. Whatever their shape or size, it all begins with the right fit: a harness that sits comfortably, moves with your dog and stays secure on every walk. This guide walks you through how to measure, what a good fit feels like and what else to look for, so you can choose with confidence.

Start with fit and measuring

Fit matters more than anything else. A harness that is too loose can slip or twist, while one that is too snug can rub and restrict movement. Before you choose a size, take two simple measurements with a soft tape measure:

  • Neck: measure around the base of the neck, where the harness will sit, rather than high up where a collar would rest.
  • Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.

Keep the tape comfortably snug but not tight, and measure while your dog is standing. Every harness brand sizes a little differently, so always compare both measurements against the size guide for the harness you are choosing rather than relying on breed or weight alone. For PETARA, that is our Size Guide. If your dog falls between two sizes, sizing up usually allows for a more comfortable fit, especially with fuller coats.

Checking the fit

Once the harness is on, you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably beneath each strap. The harness should sit evenly across the chest, without pressing into the front legs or riding up towards the throat, and your dog should be able to walk, sit and turn freely.

Adjustable neck and chest straps make it much easier to refine the fit as your dog grows, changes coat or simply settles into their new harness.

Harness or collar?

A collar is lovely for carrying an ID tag, but many owners prefer to clip the lead to a harness for walks. A well-fitted harness spreads contact across the chest and shoulders rather than focusing it at the neck, and it gives you a secure, steady connection when you need to guide your dog past distractions.

A harness can also be easier to put on and take off for dogs who are wriggly or sensitive about their necks. Many owners keep a light collar for identification and use a harness for every walk.

Padding and comfort

Your dog will wear their harness walk after walk, so softness is worth paying attention to. Look for:

  • Cushioned lining where the harness rests against the chest and back.
  • Smooth edges that will not dig in as your dog moves.
  • Comfortable weight that feels secure without being bulky.
  • Secure buckles and hardware that close firmly and stay closed.

A comfortable harness is one your dog is happy to wear, and that makes it easier to enjoy walks together, day after day.

Hands-free walking and lead length

Your lead shapes how a walk feels just as much as your harness does. A hands-free dog lead, worn around the waist or across the body, keeps your hands free for a coffee, your phone or a pram, while your dog stays connected to you. Many hands-free leads also convert to a traditional handheld lead for moments when you want closer control.

Adjustable length is just as valuable. A shorter length keeps your dog close on busy footpaths, at crossings and in cafes, while a longer length gives them room to sniff and explore in quieter, open spaces. An adjustable dog lead, or leash, that moves between the two means one lead can suit every kind of walk.

Choosing the fabric

The material of a harness affects how it feels, how it wears and how it looks. Nylon and webbing are practical and hard-wearing. Padded mesh is light and breathable. Velvet offers a soft, plush hand-feel and a rich depth of colour that makes an everyday walk feel a little more special.

A velvet dog harness rewards a little gentle care. Spot clean with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent, allow it to air dry naturally, and avoid harsh chemicals or machine washing to keep the pile looking beautiful.

A quick checklist

  • Measure the neck and chest with a soft tape measure.
  • Check both measurements against the size guide for that harness.
  • If your dog is between sizes, consider sizing up.
  • Confirm the two-finger fit once the harness is on.
  • Look for adjustable straps, cushioned lining and smooth edges.
  • Pair your harness with a lead that suits how you like to walk.
